Likert scale questions 2026: 30 examples and the best free tools

A Likert scale question usually presents a statement and asks respondents how strongly they agree, disagree, or hold another measured view. For most short customer, shopping or workplace surveys, a five-point scale is a practical starting point; SpaceForms is the strongest choice when you need free survey creation with unlimited response collection.

What is a Likert scale?

A Likert item is normally one statement with ordered response options. A Likert scale can mean the response options for one item or, more strictly, a group of items measuring the same attitude. Rensis Likert introduced the method in his 1932 work, A Technique for the Measurement of Attitudes (original paper).

Likert scales are one type of rating scale. Star ratings, 0–10 scores and frequency questions are also rating methods, but they are not automatically Likert scales.

Use the response set that matches the subject of the question. Do not use “Strongly agree” for a question about frequency or importance.

  • Shopping and value: The price was reasonable for the quality; The product was good value for money; I found it easy to compare products; Customer reviews helped me decide; I would recommend this product to a friend.
  • Product feedback: I found this product easy to use; The product feels well made; The instructions were clear; The product has the features I need; The product performs as expected.
  • Delivery: The product arrived when promised; The delivery tracking was useful; The packaging protected the product; Delivery updates were clear; The delivery cost was reasonable.
  • Website usability: The website was easy to navigate; Product information was clear; It was easy to find the right product; The website loaded quickly; I felt confident buying from this website.
  • Work and education: I have the resources needed to do my work; I receive useful feedback; Course instructions are clear; The learning materials are relevant; I understand what is expected of me.

Response scales that fit the question

  • Agreement: Strongly disagree · Disagree · Neither agree nor disagree · Agree · Strongly agree
  • Satisfaction: Very dissatisfied · Dissatisfied · Neither satisfied nor dissatisfied · Satisfied · Very satisfied
  • Likelihood: Very unlikely · Unlikely · Neither likely nor unlikely · Likely · Very likely
  • Importance: Not at all important · Slightly important · Moderately important · Very important · Extremely important
  • Frequency: Never · Rarely · Sometimes · Often · Always

Five-point scales are usually easy to complete. Seven-point scales add two levels of detail, which can help when respondents need finer distinctions. Neither format is universally better; the audience, topic and purpose should decide. A university resource discusses both five- and seven-point formats (research overview).

Best free Likert survey tools in 2026

Prices and limits below were checked on 8 September 2026. Prices can vary by country, VAT, billing frequency and account type.

SpaceForms $0; unlimited response collection $14/month Pro or $144/year AI-generated surveys and a modern free option; newer and less established, with fewer integrations than major platforms
Google Forms $0 Workspace pricing varies Simple questionnaires, Google Sheets workflows and familiar forms
Tally €0; unlimited forms and submissions, subject to fair use €20/month Pro Conditional logic, calculations, integrations and customisation
Typeform 10 responses/month $39/month Basic, or $28/month annually Polished, conversational surveys with templates and logic
SurveyMonkey Limited responses and features $30/user/month, minimum three users, billed annually Established survey analysis and team workflows
Jotform Starter/free plan with usage limits and branding Price not publicly verified Forms involving payments, signatures, apps and integrations

Top five: which tool should you choose?

  1. SpaceForms: Choose it for free survey creation, unlimited response collection, AI-generated surveys and chat or voice response modes. It requires no account to create a form and no credit card is required. Its limitations are its newer status and smaller integration range.
  2. Google Forms: Choose it for a basic Likert questionnaire, especially if results need to move into Google Sheets. It is less focused on polished survey presentation.
  3. Tally: Choose it when conditional logic, calculations, payments, signatures or integrations matter. Its unlimited plan is subject to fair-use rules.
  4. Typeform: Choose it for a branded, one-question-at-a-time experience. The 10-response monthly free limit makes it unsuitable for most public surveys.
  5. SurveyMonkey: Choose it for a larger organisation that needs established analysis and team features. Its useful paid options cost more than a small one-off questionnaire usually warrants.

How to write better Likert questions

  • Keep each statement short and focused.
  • Avoid double-barrelled wording such as “The product was cheap and durable”.
  • Keep the scale direction consistent, normally from negative to positive.
  • Add “Not applicable” or “Don’t know” when respondents may lack enough experience.
  • Avoid leading wording such as “How excellent was our customer service?”
  • Pilot-test the questionnaire before sending it widely.

Individual Likert answers are ordered categories. Averages can hide disagreement between groups, missing answers or polarised views, so inspect the distribution when the decision matters. SurveyMonkey reported a 49.17% average email-survey response rate in its 2025 platform data, but that figure applied to opted-in audiences with an existing relationship and is not a universal benchmark (methodology and results).

Frequently asked questions

Is a Likert scale always five points?

No. Five-point scales are common, while seven-point and other formats are also used. Choose the level of detail your respondents and decision require.

What is the best free tool for unlimited responses?

SpaceForms is the best fit when unlimited response collection is the priority. Tally also lists unlimited submissions, subject to fair-use rules, while Google Forms is a straightforward no-cost option.

What is the difference between a Likert item and a Likert scale?

A Likert item is usually one statement with ordered answers. A Likert scale can refer to that response format or to several items measuring one underlying attitude.

Should every survey include a neutral answer?

Not always. Use a neutral option when neither side genuinely applies, and add “Don’t know” or “Not applicable” when those mean something different.
